The mission of the Opera Theater of Lakeland is:
- To celebrate, to nurture, and to enrich Polk County, Lakeland in particular, by
producing and presenting operatic performances of the highest quality featuring both traditional as well as lesser known works
- To recruit new audiences for opera through these performances as well as
affordable ticket pricing
- To fill and large and growing void in the arts education curriculum in the region
with comprehensive on-site and off-site educational programs and a wide array of internship opportunities
- To provide opportunities for emerging performers and established
professionals and to nurture regionally-based talent through the creation of this resident opera company
- To become the base for opera appreciation for a wide spectrum of local
residents and visitors alike
The goals of the Opera Theater of Lakeland are:
- To create a professional, regional opera company in Central Florida based in
Polk County that embodies the highest standards of artistic excellence and promotes the operatic art form making them accessible to a diverse audience
- To present the finest singers, stage directors, and guest conductors while
encouraging and supporting talented performers from our area. The artists will be a mixture of seasoned professionals, together with emerging talent who will benefit from audience exposure and practical experience of live performances
- To present at least three operas per season in a variety of styles, including
well-known classics, contemporary pieces, lesser-known works, operetta, and Zarzuela. In addition, our company will place equal emphasis on the theatrical elements and musical values of the work presented
- To be an integral part of the community, further enriching local artistic culture,
by drawing from the community in order to give back to it
- To establish a Young Artists Program and a Student Apprentice program,
promoting an artistically challenging environment for young American singers, conductors, and directors entering the opera field by providing training and performance opportunities. We will also utilize college students as technical interns in our productions (stage management, costumes, sets, makeup, wigs) so that they receive hands-on experience with a professional opera company
- To place greater emphasis on community outreach by nurturing new opera
audiences through educational programs and dress rehearsals for students. During the year we will do outreach programs at the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, Florida, including one act operas, concerts, or scene recitals to introduce the art form to a wider audience
